Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air?
It's 92°F outside, you're sweating, and your AC is blowing air that feels more like a fan than air conditioning. This is one of the most common emergency calls we get — and the fix depends on the cause. Here's how to diagnose it.
Check These First (DIY)
1. Thermostat Set to "Fan" Instead of "Cool"
It sounds obvious, but it happens constantly. If your thermostat fan setting is on "ON" instead of "AUTO," the fan runs continuously — even when the system isn't actively cooling. Check the thermostat first. Set it to "COOL" and "AUTO."
2. Clogged Air Filter
A severely clogged filter restricts airflow so much that the evaporator coil can freeze — and a frozen coil can't cool air. Turn off the system, replace the filter, let the coil thaw for 2–3 hours, then turn it back on. If that was the issue, you'll have cool air again.
3. Circuit Breaker Tripped
Your AC has two components: the air handler inside and the condenser outside. If the condenser's breaker tripped, the inside fan still runs — but no cooling happens. Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker labeled "AC" or "condenser."
Call a Tech for These
Low Refrigerant (Freon Leak)
Refrigerant is what actually moves heat out of your home. If the level is low due to a leak, your system can't cool effectively. Signs include warm air, ice on the refrigerant lines, and a hissing sound. This requires a licensed technician — refrigerant handling is regulated by the EPA.
Failed Compressor
The compressor is the heart of your AC. If it fails, the system moves air but doesn't cool it. A failing compressor often comes with loud noises, hard starting, or the system tripping the breaker repeatedly.
Dirty Condenser Coils
The outdoor unit releases heat absorbed from inside your home. If the condenser coils are coated in dirt or debris, that heat has nowhere to go — and your system struggles to cool. Annual coil cleaning during a tune-up prevents this.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
Restricted airflow (clogged filter, closed vents) or low refrigerant can cause the evaporator coil to freeze solid. The ice blocks heat exchange and you get warm air from the vents. Turn the system off, let it thaw, and call us to find the root cause.
